Meme Surung Homestay is located in the heart of the small mountain village Munduk in Northern Bali. You will find our historic houses about 80 km northward from the International Airport near Denpasar in South Bali, at a central and quiet spot at the same time.
The small cosy Dutch-Malay style houses already exist since the early 19th century and opened their doors for guests in 1992. It is one of the first homestays of Munduk village, at a time when the mountain village wasn’t a popular destination for visitors like it is today. Though, it was already favoured since the beginning of 19th century, because of its bracing climate and beautiful green scenery.
Traditionally homestays are places, where Balinese families offer guests a space in their homes to stay. Nowadays there are many accommodations of this type in Bali as well as in Munduk.
The special about Meme Surung Homestay is that the owners conserve and protect the small Dutch-Malay houses just the way they were built. The houses keep the wisdom of their history and are witnesses of the different time periods.
While your visit you might imagine that here, right on this ground of Meme Surung, the first settlement of the area started. As well as in colonial days the Dutch came to this place to recover from the heat of their strategic regions, where they stayed. They brought their architecture here and enjoyed the freshening mountain climate.
Meme Surung Homestay is named after a strong, powerful woman with a warm heart. ‘Meme’ is the Balinese word for “mother” or the respectful expression for a woman. The family of Meme Surung still stay on this compound, already for several generations, and are very happy to welcome you as their guests to this historic and spiritual place.
Stay with Munduk people, stay with us.
